a work in progress...
Johnny Folsom’s father left him when he was just two years old. Instead of with his mother and him, Johnny’s dad chose to live in prison, where the cells were cold, but not as cold as his house. His mom and dad had once been in love, once they were lovers who could not and would not live with out the other. Night after night they ravished each other, but time took its toll with the presence of Johnny. Instead of passion for her man, her passion was now for another, the new man in her arms. She could not see this, but for him this was a betrayal of their vows, betrayal of their love, and more than anything, betrayal to whom he had fallen for. She no longer ran to him when he came home, and now he had became jealous what he had given her.
Johnny Folsom grew up and became friends with the strange boy next door. His name was Fred Haggard and he was always talking, talking, talking, talking, and talking; it didn’t matter to him whether any one was listening or not, he just kept talking. He was convinced if he ever stopped he would lose Inspiration. Later in life, long after Johnny and he were friends, Fred would start talking in big tents and casting out all sorts of wicked sprits. Unfortunately for Fred, the uses of these talents were soon overshadowed by a dirty little secret. Now a man with a secret aint that unheard of, it’s just his secret was a little more dirty and unappreciated than most.
Johnny was long gone by the time Fred fell fowl of his fateful way. He was now living in New Gate, Virginia as a prison guard. He was assigned cell block eight, which was inhabited mainly by murders. These were the men who would beat their wives after a long night of hard drinkin’, who after they had taken everything they wanted from a man, would shoot him in the gut just to see how it would go. Most other men in his place become as hard as nails in cement; Johnny just took it in stride, he would clock in and clock out five days a week, not showing anything. All the prisoners hated and love him, for he was always by the book, nothing ever changed that. Johnny always did what he knew was expected. He was never cruel, was never kind; he never cared. He carried himself so that everybody knew that he didn’t care.
Johnny had one son with a woman who was just like his father, she was gone; but unlike his father, she didn’t choose to leave. She left after a long fight that she never fought. One night after her shift at the hospital, she was hit by a soon to be “recovering alcoholic”. His name was Jay Daniels and he had been mourning the loss of his marriage; his wife had left him just two days ago. She had given Jay many chances, but he never could stop. The last straw for her was when she found out he had spent $2000 dollars on a credit card he was keeping from her. Jay had grown accustomed over the last 2 years of looking at a girly-web site that was pay as you go. Penny had always loved Jay and she would do anything for him, but there was nothing she could do. So last Wednesday, she took their son and left him a note saying not to look for them.
